Directions for Use

Bedpans are used when a senior cannot voluntarily use the available toilet facilities and require assistance. When assisting someone with using a bedpan you must demonstrate emotional sensitivity and also gentleness as this process is not easy for the patient either. Even though positioning a bedpan may seem complicated at first, following proper procedures can make the entire process quite simple. We recommend following the guidelines below:

1. Communicate

Greet the patient and explain that you will be assisting them in the process of using the bedpan. Remember that this may be an embarrassing situation for them as well and assure them that their privacy will be respected.

2. Prepare

Wash your hands with hot water and soap, dry them, and then put on a pair of gloves. Also, cover the sheets with a waterproof protector (if available) or a large clean bath towel.

Affix the midsection of the bedpan on to the base and check if it has been locked in place. Now sprinkle some talcum powder on the edges of the bedpan as it will help in sliding it beneath the patient. Remember that talcum powder mustn’t be used if the patient has any open wounds around the buttock region.

Fill the bedpan with a little water or spray it with vegetable oil as this will make the cleaning process easier.

3. Privacy

Close the door and draw the curtains so that the patient has privacy. In case the patient is in a sharing room, then draw the curtain separating the beds.

Ask the patient to remove his/her clothing from the lower part of their body. They can be covered with a blanket till they have completed disrobing.

4. Positioning

Ask the patient to lie on their back with their feet flat on the bed and their knees bent.

The patient will have to raise their hips. In case the patient is too weak to do so, turn the patient on their side.

Slide the bedpan under or next to the patient's buttocks depending on whether the patient is on their back or side respectively. Now roll the patients who are on their side, on to their backs so that they can use the bedpan comfortably.

Prop the patient up using multiple pillows or raise the head of the bed up bringing them into a natural seating position for easier toileting.

Now step away in order to give the patient privacy

Cleaning and Waste disposal

Clean the patient with a wet washcloth or sanitary wipes. For female patients, wipe from front to the back in order to prevent subsequent urinary tract infections owing to contamination of the urinary tract with stools during cleaning.

Empty the contents of the bedpan into the toilet and flush them down.

Now clean the bedpan with cold water before dismantling it and rinsing it again with soapy water and a toilet brush. Leave the bed pan to dry.

Dispose off your gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap.

Make sure that the patient's room is well ventilated once again.
