What is a Cervical collar?

The cervical collar is also known as a C collar or neck support brace. Cervical collar is used to support the head and the spinal cord. It is a medical aid device used for cervical spine stabilization and immobilization of the neck. It is as simple as a neck brace for neck pain due to surgery. It is also used in cases of minor neck sprains, cervical strains as well as muscle pain.

Why use a cervical collar?

A soft cervical collar or a C collar prevents any injury caused by the movement of the neck. Cervical collar provides comfort and ventilation to the neck and holds it in position.

If used daily as recommended by a physician for a particular period of time, the neck collar can gradually correct and restore cervical lordosis, a condition where the spine does not curve as it normally should, thereby causing pain.

How to Wear

Wearing a cervical collar of the appropriate size is absolutely essential. Wearing a small cervical collar that is too small causes immobilization of the head, for it to be held in a position of flexion whereas wearing a large cervical collar causes the head and neck to be held in a position of extension, both of which are not neutral positions and can cause strain for the wearer.

The proper way to wear a cervical collar is such that the chin rests on the chin support in the front of the cervical collar and the hook and loop closure velcro straps are at the back of the neck collar

The hook and loop straps are to face backward. Fasten back to front.

The cervical collar is not to be worn upside down. The chin support should face upwards.

Gradually decrease the wearing times of these collars as the pain decreases and eventually let go of the collar.

The schedules for wearing cervical collars varies from senior to senior.

Avoid wearing C collars for a long time as they tend to weaken cervical muscles over a period of prolonged use, hamper the range of movement of the neck, and creates a psychological dependence.

If severe pain persists throughout the night, the doctor may recommend wearing the cervical soft collar at night. And will gradually decrease the usage of the neck support collar both in the daytime and at night.
