Directions for Use
Urine cans are used when someone cannot voluntarily use the available toilet facilities and require assistance. When assisting someone with using a urine can, you as the caregiver must try to be relaxed and patient because this can be embarrassing for the senior as well. Following the guidelines given below can help make the process of caregiving easier:
1.Communicate - Greet the patient and explain that you will be assisting them in the process of using the urine can. Remember that this may be an embarrassing situation for them as well and assure them that their privacy will be respected.
2. Prepare -
a. Wash your hands with hot water and soap, dry them, and then put on a pair of gloves. Also optionally, cover the sheets with a waterproof protector (if available) or a large clean bath towel.
b. Ask the person you're assisting to take down their pants and underwear if they are female, or unzip their pants if they are male. Offer help if needed.
a.Cover the patient with a blanket or sheet for privacy. If they can complete the process safely and without assistance, step out of the room while they use the urine container.
4. Positioning -
a. Ask the patient to put the urine can between their legs.
b. Raise or level the bed (if possible) as necessary. Otherwise use pillows to prop the patient up so that they are comfortable during the process.
c. In case the person needs assistance, position the urine can for them and hold it gently while they relieve themselves. When the patient is done, remove the urine can and close the lid of the spout.
Cleaning and Waste disposal
Clean the patient with a wet washcloth or sanitary wipes. For female patients, wipe from front to the back. Dry the patient. In case the patient did not require assistance during the process, help them with washing and cleaning their hands.
Empty the contents of the urine can into the toilet and flush them down.
Now rinse and wash the urine can and its lid with soapy water before leaving it to dry.
Dispose off your gloves and wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap.
